About this experience
The Camino del Apu Ausangate is a spiritual pilgrimage through the Vilcanota mountain range. For five days you cross mountain passes over 5,000 m, turquoise lagoons, glaciers and reddish formations that anticipate Vinicunca, all under the protection of the highest snow-capped mountain in Cusco (6,372 m).
Overnight stays in community lodges with hot showers and local cuisine. Llamas carry your gear as you walk among herds of alpacas and vicuñas.
For experienced trekkers looking for the most authentic and remote of the Andes.

Your journey, day by day

Day 1: Cusco – Chillca
The tour will begin in a very comfortable tourist bus, which will take you to the Vilcanota River to first visit the Checacupe temple and the beautiful Pitumarca valley. Following the route, you will arrive at Japura, where you will walk a short distance to reach Chilca. There the inhabitants of the area will welcome you in your first accommodation playing their Andean instruments and offering you a traditional coca tea. The accommodation has hot showers and full bathrooms, as well as 8 double and matrimonial rooms. In addition, there you will try delicious and nutritious local food, such as alpaca meat, and of course, you will also be able to try vegetarian food or other preferences.

Day 2: Chilca – Machuracay
After breakfast you will take a walk alongside thousands of alpacas and llamas in the valley of the Phinaya glacier. In search of more glaciers in Santa Catalina, they will climb the inspiring Pjachaj Falls, until they reach a point where they can enjoy a delicious picnic lunch. Then, they will walk for around 5 hours surrounded by moraines, glaciers and lagoons in the direction of Machuracay Tambo. There the accommodation family will be waiting to welcome you. It should be noted that a caravan of llamas will carry your luggage during the journey.

Day 3: Machucaray – Anantapata
To start the day, you will undertake your first 5 m mountain pass with a spectacular panoramic view. As we descend the glaciers, we will continue walking towards Lake Ausangate Cocha for lunch. Then you will immerse yourself in an incredible experience where you will be surrounded by reddish sandstone sediment formations, without a doubt, a unique place. There you will also see vicuñas and if you are lucky some condors. After a day of walking you will arrive at the third accommodation ready to relax and enjoy the rest of the day.

Day 4: Anantapata – Huampococha
After breakfast, you will continue your adventure by going to another mountain pass, where you will descend on foot towards Lake Kayrawiri. During the descent, you will be surrounded by mountain peaks, a large valley, and if that were not enough, you will also have a spectacular view of the colorful streaks embedded in the slopes. Then they will continue their journey to “Cerro Laya Grande”, passing through the great Inca glacier and appreciating the amazing colors of the Yauricunca sediments. There they will have lunch contemplating this unparalleled landscape, and then head to the fourth accommodation. Along the way, you will be able to see hundreds of Andean geese nesting on the cliffs of Anta. In addition, you will be able to appreciate the pyramidal formations of Apu Labrayani, located near Huampococha Tambo, where you will spend the night on the “Camino del Apu Ausangate”.

Day 5: Huampococha – Cusco
To continue with your adventure, you will ascend to your last port where you will have a spectacular view of the mountains. From there, you will descend all the way and encounter the most fantastic limestone formations dating back to the Cretaceous era. There they will take an excursion all the way to Trapiche and after experiencing a unique trip through the Andes, they will have lunch and then return to Cusco by bus.
